Workers in the fast food industry are expected to be joined this afternoon by members of union GMB in a protest over wages.

The demonstration is due to take place outside McDonald’s in Whitehall, Central London at 5pm. The campaign is fighting to secure a £10 an hour living wage, trade union rights for fast food workers and an end to zero-hours contracts.

Following this, a forum will take place at 6.30pm in Room 8, House of Commons, Westminster. Fast food workers across the UK and US will be joined by speakers John McDonnell, Shadow Chancellor, Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) president Ian Hodson, and Kevin Rowan of the Trades Union Congress (TUC).

“Fast food workers are organising and fighting back,” said Kamaljeet Jandu, GMB national officer. “In the UK and America, fast food workers are forced to live in poverty by multinational and hugely profitable companies like McDonald’s.

“While McDonald’s has raked in profit at the expense of its workers, it has been exposed as not paying its tax. McDonald’s is in the dock. GMB is inviting the public to join fast food workers in the fight for higher wages, union rights and respect at work.”

Today’s events follows a series of protests across the UK last November, outside fast food outlets and Marks & Spencer, to stand alongside workers in New York City campaigning for a real living wage of $15 per hour.

Reported move follows on from the success of such products in the fast-food giant’s Indian restaurants

Global fast-food giant Burger King is reportedly keen on introducing more vegetarian items to the menus of its UK restaurants.

The alleged move follows the success of such items in Burger King India, which introduced six vegetarian snacks, sandwiches and entry-level burgers in its offering when the chain began life in the Indian nation in November 2014.

“Looking at the response here, the global management is evaluating introducing some of these options going forward to other vegetarian-friendly markets like the UK,” Raj Varman, chief executive officer of Burger King India, told India’s largest news agency, Press Trust of India.

Industrial strikes by dock-workers in the US have made it difficult for Japan to secure a steady supply of chips

Fast food chain KFC is the latest business in Japan to be blighted by the Asian nation’s potato shortage.

Industrial strikes by dock-workers on the west coast of the United States have made it difficult for Japan to secure a steady supply of chips due to disrupted or cancelled shipments.

McDonald’s has also had to start rationing its servings over the last six weeks.

KFC Japan said in a statement: “The company will halt the sales of potatoes temporarily until a stable supply becomes available.”

The chain is currently advertising meals with coleslaw instead of chips on its website.

The story behind the creation of the fast food giant McDonald’s could be set to hit the silver screen, according to reports.

Reports in The Guardian and film press claim talks are under way to bring the story of McDonald’s origins to life, with director John Lee Hancock in discussions to direct.

It is said the story, which is titled “The Founder”, will focus on the relationship between founding brothers Mac and Dick McDonald and Illinois businessman Ray Kroc, who eventually took full control of the business in the early 1960’s.

Reports say, “The Founder” will be in the same vein as the Oscar-winning movie about Facebook, The Social Network, and Hancock most recently directed Saving Mr Banks about the creation of the classic Walt Disney film Mary Poppins.
